Establish background checks for firearm purchases at the Federal level - close the "Gun Show Loophole"

Created by D.G. on December 19, 2012

Currently, federal law requires criminal background checks ONLY for guns sold through licensed firearm dealers, which account for just 60% of all gun sales in the United States. A loophole in the law, called "the gun show loophole," allows individuals not “engaged in the business” of selling firearms to sell guns without processing any paperwork. Some states have their own laws for background checks during gun shows in their state; 33 states have done nothing at all. An automated Federal background check system would be cost-effective and efficient, using all Federal databases - those of the FBI, CIA, military forces, etc. - some of which the states have no access to. CLOSE THE GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE!
