Technology exists today that can be used to retrofit current guns or be included in new guns to make them more safe. Examples of tech that reduces or eliminates the possibility of unauthorized users of weapons to fire a weapon include biometric grips & RFID tags. With increased demand & legislative mandate these technologies can quickly improve in effectiveness. Looking at gas mileage mandates on cars we see a measured approach to deployment over time & significant investments by makers towards achieving benchmarks. Reduced restrictions on gun sales & ownership pegged to smart technology adoption & tax incentives for weapon retrofitting would spur adoption. As technology becomes increasingly reliable & affordable penalties for sales & ownership of guns lacking smart tech should be adopted.
