establish Fair Trade policies vs. Free Trade.

Created by S.P. on February 05, 2013

In order to promote fair trade and U.S. jobs, particularly well-paid manufacturing jobs, the U.S. government should establish as policy that products imported into the U.S. are manufactured under equivalent conditions as if they were manufactured in the United States of America.

This would mean that any imported product would be manufactured with the same requirements for: environmental protections, especially pollution controls; worker protection; working conditions; and, product safety.

Additionally, in order to ensure a strong maritime industry, a goal should be set for 10% of imports to be shipped on U.S. flagged vessels. This should have a specific time frame in which the goal must be met, with intermediate targets which should also be met (7 y for 10%, 5 y for 5%, and 3 y for 3%).
