This petition is to establish a set of federal guidelines for all prisons, privately owned or otherwise, for the care and treatment of transgendered individuals.
All too often a transgendered person is sentenced to the wrong prison and denied continuing heath care that various medical organizations agree is absolutely necessary for both the mental and physical well-being of a patient. Transwomen sentenced to time in male prisons are commonly sexually abused and raped by prisoners and guards alike in addition to being denied both hormone blockers and proper replacement therapy that they were already taking. The inverse with transmen in a woman's prison is obviously also true, possibly with less rape.
This is an injustice that should not be allowed to stand. We are more than our anatomy.
