African American women and girls are daily faced with racism and sexism. Images of beauty in the media do not affirm black features; at the crux of this problem is the feeling that in order to fit in, black women have to alter themselves. This promotes self-hatred, low self-esteem, and feelings of unworthiness. Setting aside a week where the lives of black women can be celebrated and recognized will bring the contributions of black women out from the shadows of American history and give young girls and women models to emulate. African American Women’s History Week will develop positive self-esteem and contribute to a successful future for women of color.
