Sculpture was the first form of human expression. Sculpture has been both a primary means of creativity and a way we see ancient civilizations. In an ever more hectic society, sculpture can be a means of contemplation, reflection, aesthetic pleasure, social commentary, and the adulation of great persons and ideas, but sculpture is in danger of being swamped by digital media and art forms requiring less time and energy, and fewer resources. Every city should have a sculpture center. A National Sculpture Day would draw attention to this now-endangered art and stimulate participation by artists and patrons. Organizations both civic and private would be encouraged to acquire and display sculpture, and study the history of the art as it applies to civilization and to the American experiment.
