Unemployment is vastly under-counted using the current Bureau of Labor Statistics methods. We deserve honesty and accuracy in the numbers.
Currently, the statistics do not include large categories of unemployed people: the "discouraged workers" who have dropped out of looking for a job, the part time, minimum wage service sector employees who are seeking real salaried jobs, the self employed who can not find customers for their products or services, and those who work unpaid in small family businesses or farms.
Currently, persons are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work.
An honest accounting of the unemployment crisis has to begin with an honest accounting of the unemployed.
