Furling the confederate flag is a step toward reconciliation, yet much more is required for our nation to heal its wounds of racial injustice. As we collectively seek a more perfect union, a significant step in creating a genuine and productive national conversation around race would be the call by President Obama for a nationwide commission for racial truth and justice.
The purpose would be to officially honor and elevate the stories of Americans whose civil & human rights have been violated, whether subtly or overtly, by other Americans, with the goal of restoring justice, via open-hearted conversation and truth-seeking between both persecuted and perpetrators.
Similar commissions of restorative justice have been used successfully by Germany, Rwanda, Argentina & South Africa.
