We propose that June 10th be established as a National Day of Enlightenment, recognizing the philosophical age in which this nation was founded, and which animated the founding fathers in their quest for a nation based on reason and liberty.
June 10th is chosen, as it is on that date in 1797 that the Treaty of Tripoli became the law of the land. The treaty, ratified unanimously by the Senate and signed by President John Adams, states in Article 11 that "the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion".
The US was founded as a secular nation of religious tolerance, where all a free to pursue their chosen beliefs, yet where no one belief is empowered above any other.
