Establish a national Truth and Reconciliation Commission to openly address slavery and racism and recommend changes.

The United States continues to struggle with the legacy of slavery. Events such as the attack on Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC are a tragic reminder that American race relations need significant improvment. It is time that the U.S. openly confronted the issues of slavery, racism, and discrimination, and acknowledged the impact that these issues have had on African-American communities, and the U.S. as a whole. Countries such as South Africa, Chile, Canada, have established Truth and Reconciliation Commissions to help their nations move forward, and the U.S. also needs a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to openly identify and acknowedge the issues, enable the airing of grievences, and to identify concrete steps to improve American society.
