According to a report by the Infectious Diseases Society of Americ (IDSA) progress in developing new antibiotics has been "alarmingly slow." The emergence of drug-resistent pathogens is the "most pressing medical need" that we face in this nation
The drug companies are not responding effectively on their own. What is needed is federal leadership that will bring sufficient new resources to bear on solving this most serious problem, one that poses a real threat to the health and well-being of every American.
We, therefore, call on the Obama administration to create a new partnership with industry to expedite and facilitate the development of the needed new round of antibiotics.
