In an effort to memorialize the lives lost as a result of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, September 11 should be recognized as a federal holiday. Since 2001, this day has been recognized as Patriot Day (changed to Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in 2012), although it is not considered to be a federal holiday. If recognized as a federal holiday, all non-essential federal offices will be closed on this day and federal employees will receive compensation for the holiday. There are currently 11 federal holidays.
