The moon will be mans first permanent foothold in the universe beyond our own planet. It will provide the environment necessary to conduct many various types of research that will be important to humanities long term survival in space. It will also make future missions to mars and other regions of our solar system easily accessible. Not only will establishing a permanent facility create jobs and spur new technologies. We can also store nuclear waste on the moon safely. This is just the first step, i am sure a whole host of possibilities will open up once we take this important first step.
