The knowledge to safely handle and use firearms is one way to preclude accidental deaths resulting from the use of firearms or their prescence. We educate the public about drunk driving, but thousands of people do not know the basic rules of firearm safety. Several states require firearms safety to be included in hunter safety programs to obtain a hunting license. It used to be individuals would receive firearms training in the military, but with no draft only individuals volunteering now receive traing. Unfortunately the majority of individuals now receive training from movies and television which does not practice good firearms safety practices.
