In the Midland/Odessa region of West Texas, rental prices have hit an unbelievable and atrocious extreme. Campers in people's yards are being rented for $1000 a month. A run down 600 square foot apartment will cost one at least $900 before taxes, fess, and utilities. There is an ever growing and dangerous crime problem and homeless population in these once beautiful cities due to that extreme cost of living. Even the low income housing, reserved for those households that make around $25,000 a year, costs around $750 a month before living expenses. This unfair treatment of tenants can not go on. How are people like myself, with $30,000 in student loans and a job that barely makes more than that in a year supposed to maintain a savings account while paying $1200 a month for a small studio?
