This year marks the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in our country. Yet the black population still cannot enjoy the same quality of life as the white population, mostly due to lack of access to good jobs, education and safety.
The best way to address inequality and poverty resulting from slavery is to invest in jobs, safety and education in impoverished neighborhoods. This requires significant financial resources. The money should come from the lands and businesses that benefited from slave labor during years of slavery. Special tax should be levied and the fund should be set up for this purpose by the government.
