The number of deaths caused by driving while impaired or distracted drivers far exceeds the death by guns. President Obama during his Jan 16 Gun Control speech stated "if there's even one thing we can do to reduce this violence, if there's even one life that can be saved, then we've got an obligation to try it".
The US Dept of Transportation states "every 53 minutes on average, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash (9,878 people in total in 2011). Every 90 seconds, someone is injured because of this entirely preventable crime". They further states that over 3,000 people were killed by distracted drivers. This does not take into account how many injuries occured.
It is time for minimal standards since the states cannot seem to control the problems.
