In the modern era the cost of protecting our freedom is paid by very few brave Americans that volunteer for military service. The public at large does not make sacrifices to support a war effort. By borrowing money to fund a war, we pass on the cost to the next generation.
This petition requests Congress and the President to pass a law requiring a flat tax to be applied to all citizens in times of war or substantial conflict. The tax should apply to earned and un-earned income, and not exceed 2%. It should not be subject to any tax exemption, except that current military personnel and veterans would be exempt from the tax. The tax should continue until the financial cost of an armed conflict is recovered. As commander in chief, the President shall have the power to invoke the tax.
