Excuse the Postal Service From Being Forced to Fund the Future Retiree's Health Benefits Fund to Save the Postal Service

Created by R.S. on August 06, 2012

The Postal Service is required by law to prefund a fund called the Civil Service Retirement System. They are forced to pay over 5 billion dollars per year. The Postal Service has estimated it has overfunded the fund by 50 to 75 billion dollars since the 1970's, even though there is enough money in it already to fund many future decades. Due to the Postal Service being a quasilegal organization, it cannot change the law itself in order to save itself, and Congress has gone into recess without changing it. Recently the Postal Service has announced that it has to default on a 5.5 billion dollar payment to the fund. President Obama, we need you to step up and fight for the Postal Service, or else 574,000 Americans will lose their jobs and 312 million Americans will lose their mail.
