Sign an executive order allowing discharge of private student loans in bankruptcy, giving borrowers a bargaining chip

Created by C.R. on December 03, 2015

Private student loan debt, and defaults, are at an all-time high. Private student loan companies lobbied Congress to make private student loans nearly impossible to discharge through bankruptcy. Now these companies can lend extremely large sums of money to young kids who wouldn't be creditworthy for even a car loan. Borrowers are forced into payment plans that are impossible to pay and the lenders are unwilling to negotiate, because they don't have to, the borrowers are trapped regardless. By allowing for these loans to be dischargeable, it would provide struggling borrowers a bargaining chip, some leverage with negotiating payments, or the option to discharge. You can discharge irresponsible gambling debt, but not student loans. Congress will not fix this. We need an executive order.
