The United States of America has never formally apologized for the sin of enslavement of human beings from the arrival of African slaves in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619 to the passage of the 13th amendment in 1865. The absence of a formal apology suggests that no wrongdoing was committed, we simply moved on after a war that nearly tore our country apart and after the many years of Jim Crow white supremacy in the southern part of the United States. We must end the denial in order to begin a healing process that is long overdue.
I respectfully request that the President Obama, as president of the United States of America, by way of an Executive Order on behalf of the United States of America, issue formal public apology for the sordid history of the past years’ institution of slavery.
