by Executive Order mandate change to the maximum Electric Only speed setting on All Toyota Prius

Created by E.M. on July 25, 2014

Mandate by Executive Order the Toyota Corporation to implement a software setting update on all 2002-2014 Prius to reduce the US fuel consumption by one half billion gallons cumulative in a decade. The maximum speed setting in pure electric vehicle mode historically has been set at 62 MPH. This setting turns on the gas engine 100% of the time above this setting, -essentially during ALL highway driving. Ford’s 2013 Fusion Hybrid, released with 62 MPH, later issued a voluntary update making the setting 82 MPH. This allows highway speeds without running the gas engine, providing 4-5 MPG fuel efficiency increase (10%). The 2 billion Prius drive 30 trillion miles annually. This change saves 62 million gallons per year. Inaction needlessly burns roughly a million gallons per week to atmosphere.
