Whereas militants have already destroyed ancient mosques in Timbuktu, Mali, and whereas that city and region contain irreplaceable ancient treasures of art, architecture, mathematics and science, we the undersigned urge the United States government to support the UN and encourage the international community to immediately protect these antiquities. This must happen rapidly to so that future generations can benefit from these unique and historic buildings, artwork, relics and manuscripts.
