Cano tiburones is a nature reserve in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. It is especially unique and fragile because it is a 'karst zone' as well as its part salt water part fresh water status. Unfortunately, a company called Energy Answers is attempting to build an incineration plant right on the border of the reserve which will burn 2,100 tons of solid waste and extract 2,100,000 gallons of sea water everyday for industrial use and private financial gain. This will deprive the ecosystem of vital nutrients and create air pollution.
This petition will expand the borders of the Caño Tiburones Nature Reserve to include all areas with water access to this unique wetland ecosystem. This will ensure that the pollution risks associated with industrial development are eliminated.
