Type II diabetes accounts for more than 90% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. This growing epidemic impacts one in four seniors (age 65 and over). However, Medicare, the health insurance for most seniors does not cover some of the same medical supplies for individuals with Type II diabetes as it covers for those with Type I diabetes, specifically insulin pumps. An insulin pump, provides the user with predictable and precise insulin delivery, increased flexibility in lifestyle and tighter blood glucose control. With advancements being made in insulin pump technology and other areas of diabetes management, it is vital that Medicare begin providing the same coverage it affords individuals with Type I diabetes to those with Type II diabetes including insulin pumps and supplies.
