Study after study show devastating impact of poverty on families and kids. This country, with trillions of dollars or economic activity, should be ashamed that millions of kids are forced to deal with demeaning effects of poverty ranging from shame and mental strain to health effects including malnutrition. These effects can be counteracted by simple and straightforward remedies like providng more help to their working parents. I suggest we start by expanding a currently successful federal program to make a far greater impact. Expand arned income tax credit to $5k per child and do not cap it or reduce it for larger families. US can certainly afford to spend a few more billions on its kids and cut a few billions from bloated military and medicare budgets.
