The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 established a new public service loan forgiveness program. This program discharges any remaining debt after 10 years of full-time employment in public service.
This petition requests that the definition of "public service" be expanded to include service to the commnity outside of AmeriCorps and specifically to include volunteer services. In areas that are struggling to get volunteers for services such as volunteer fire departments this creates an incentive for people to serve.
