The Selective Service Act Discriminates Based On Gender
The Selective Service Act denies equal protection under the law because it only requires males to register for the draft. The Pentagon no longer supports the exclusion of women from the military. Over the past twenty years, the percentage of women in the military has increased from 5% in 1979 to 15% in 2005, making women even more valuable to the military. Given the prominent role women play in the military, the exclusion of women from registration appears to be a clear example of the stereotyping based on gender. The civic responsibility of protecting the United States in the case of a national emergency should be evenly distributed for both women and men. The United States must be a representation for equality to the world.
