Expand the WIC Program to Support Extended Breastfeeding

Created by C.G. on January 16, 2013

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend breastfeeding for two years or more. The WIC program currently only provides support up to one year. The immune system is not fully mature until approximately age four, making breastfeeding an important support for young children.

Providing breastfeeding mothers with nutritional support for two or more years will serve to both encourage extended breastfeeding leading to healthier children and help the mother maintain her health while she provides nutrition and immunity to her child(ren).
