Currently there are approximately 27,000 graduate medical education(GME)positions for training physicians in the US. This is in comparison to the 37,000 or so applicants looking for positions to train. In the US no one can become a licensed physician without completing several years of training in an accredited GME program and passing the prerequisite licensing exams of USMLE Steps 1 through 3. Recently several members of Congress have proposed legislation to expand the current spots of training. These acts go by the names of Training Tomorrow's Doctors Today Act and the Residency Shortage Physician Act of 2013(HR.1201, HR. 1180, and S. 577). They propose to increase the number of training spots by 3000 each year staring in fiscal years 2014 and 2015 and lasting for the next 5 years.
