expel the Danish Ambassador to the United States to protest the unnecessary slaughter of a giraffe by the Copenhagen Zoo

Created by M.S. on February 10, 2014

On 2/9/14, officials at the Copenhagen Zoo slaughtered Marius, a young, healthy, male giraffe - then publicly dismembered his corpse & fed it to the zoo's lions - despite a massive public uproar asking to spare Marius. Several zoos and wildlife parks in Europe had offered to take Marius (including a private person who offered over $500,000 to save the giraffe). Despite these offers, zoo officials exterminated Marius "with a bolt to the head" because his DNA was "too common" - saying that if Marius mated then "inbreeding" might occur. Clearly, the U.S. has no jurisdiction over a foreign zoo; but expelling the Danish Ambassador would send the strongest possible message that such cruel forms of "wildlife management" are absurd when a simple answer - neutering - would have sufficed.
