explain why military soldiers are not offered 4x separation pay as provided for by 10U.S.Code 1175a instead of layoffs.

Created by E.L. on February 04, 2014

The US Military is forcefully removing tens of thousands of soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines who valiantly served in over a decade of wars. Some career fields are being cut by as much as 75%. Since military do not receive retirement benefits unless they serve 20 years, those "reduced in force" receive nothing but separation pay. 10 U.S. Code § 1175a provides a ceiling for 4 times separation pay as an incentive over forced reductions. However, the government has chosen to exercise only 1.25 times to leave by Aug 2014 or be forced out by Jan 2015 and receive 1 times. Simple math reveals it is better not to take VSP which means the government is not providing any incentive to prevent layoffs.
