Individuals convicted of federal crimes cannot be fully restored to civil liberties after having paid his or her debt to society because of a criminal conviction. There is now an unspoken caste system in the United States where convicted felons who have paid their debt to society and who have lived clean lives are deprived of opportunities. If a person has fulfilled all of his or her obligations to the criminal justice system and has lived without incident for 10 years, an expungement petition process should be enacted.
