A decision by the United States Supreme Court in 1967, Katz v. United States, stated that a person is entitled to a reasonable expectation of privacy when communicating on a public phone. This Fourth Amendment right should be extended to digital communications such as Email, personal contact lists and personal on-line calendars. Current businesses provide free apps in exchange for the right to mine private information for commercial purposes. The business emphasis is directed to how best mine the information as opposed to offering an improved product. Extending the 4th amendment right of privacy to email communications will protect the privacy of our citizens from both commercial and government intrusions and improvement the quality of services.
