Smart voting requires that the electorate knows the issues. Many candidates today choose to say anything that comes into their mind that they feel is detrimental to their opponents, without regard to truth or accuracy. It is understood that not all statements can be completely accurate, but there needs to be some penalty for a candidate, or a candidate's office releasing false information that they know is false for the sole purpose of vilifying their opponent. The electorate cannot make wise decisions when they are flooded by intentional lies. Some candidates now are repeating the lies incesssantly, even when the their own staff points out the "errors". This should not be allowed to continue. Today, it seems that the loudest, best liar gets the most votes.
