We all know the classic 1995 anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the deepest and most layered works of fiction ever. We are all also aware that Slavoj Zizek's pop culture expertise and philosophical background make him unique in his ability to decipher this text. There is only one issue. Zizek, as far as we can tell, has never watched anime. President Obama, despite promising an end to extraordinary rendition, has kept Guantanamo open, expanded torture at Bagram, handed numerous prisoners to Afghan and Iraqi forces for torture, and taken people to prisons in Somalia, Yemen and Kuwait. Most of them were innocent of any crime. Since these practices continue, we the people petition President Obama to use his power usefully and render Zizek to my house in Toronto to watch NGE with me.
