Given the loss of Flight 370 in the open ocean with no clues to what happened, the FAA must update its requirements for black-box and radio-location equipment.
The FAA requires very, very old technology for black boxes on heavy commercial aircraft. New light aircraft typically have much better equipment, but commercial airlines have complained this equipment is too expensive.
Please require the FAA to issue directives that all commercial aircraft above a certain weight have black boxes capable of both storing data and streaming data into a central tracking and recording facility. Further, that they be equipped with multiple, independent transponders that cannot be turned off by the aircrew.
