I wish FDA to reduce systemic antibiotic drugs from intestinal use and promote poorly absorbed drugs.
Since FDA seems to approve all systemic drugs to be freely used on GI system, no company seems to be working on optimal GI drugs, making Intestine an orphan organ.
Advantages of poorly absorbed antimicrobial drugs for the Gastro-Intestinal system:
1. Treatment stays focused on the target area.
2. Avoids dilution or removal of drug from target area.
3. Spares the rest of the body from any side-effects.
4. More and superior options will open.
5. Focus can shift more to treatment than on side-effects.
6. Reduced chance of resistance development.
The Gut Gap: >Trillion microbes; ~500 species; >dozen indications: only 1 focused drug (all others are sub-optimal for intestine).
