Decriminalizing marijuana will allow the police, funding for prisons, and other resources to be utilized for more serious crimes. The decriminalization of marijuana in other countries has shown that it does not increase marijuana use. More than 76 million Americans have admitted to trying marijuana. The majority of these individuals did not go on to become regular marijuana users, using other drugs, or have negative effects to their health due to marijuana use. Individuals who are convicted of a marijuana crime are denied federal financial student aid, public housing, welfare, and food stamps. Other non-drug violations, such as murder, do not carry such penalties.
