Many instructors use online homework as a substitute to creating their own assignments or using exercises in a book to save themselves time and effort on grading. Not only does this hinder the constructive feedback from professors towards students on their work, but unlike books, (which can be accessed through a library) students lose access to these resources once the semester is over. Students are required to pay for online homework subscriptions to receive the full grade for a course. The communication between professors and their students is lost, students are paying fees to be able to receive the full grade, and professors are handing their responsibilities to outside resources. The rising cost of textbook and homework fees leave the students no options but to pay beyond tuition.
