The massacre at Wounded Knee took place in 1890 when the US Army Seventh Cavalry killed hundreds of Lakota men, women and children. That land then became socially, culturally and historically sacred- much in the same way as Gettysburg is historically sacred to the Civil War. The parcel of land was taken from Native ownership through the "allotment" process- communal lands were divided up between individual native people and non-natives. The curent private owner of the land at Wounded Knee is now publicly selling this historically precious parcel. I urge the US government to purchase the land and never forget the struggle of all Native Americans at the hands of the US government by creating a national monument.
