This past week, the Supreme Court declared the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Proposition 8 of California unconstitutional. The Court now ruled that in states where same - sex marriage is now legal, couples can finally receive federal benefits. I am petitioning President Obama to legalize same - sex marriage on the Federal level, therefore legalizing it in all 50 states and U.S. territories. The time is right for this huge change. Many were opposed to interracial marriage when it was first legalized, however we warmed up to the idea (13% approval in '67 to 86% approval in '12). Take the religion out of marriage, and make this strictly a contract between two parties (whatever gender) that established rights and obligations between the couple, their parents, and in - laws.
