The federal government clearly regulates narcotic drugs both illicit and prescription. The process begins with the Federal Drug Administration approving research and use of the drug. The Drug Enforcement Administration then classifies the drug (schedule 1, 2, or 3). Marijuana has not been approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Current "medicinal" use is unregulated and is grown and distributed by lay persons with no training or education beyond a common drug dealer. It is uncontested that marijuana helps relieve chronic pain, glaucoma and other ailments. However, marijuana is a mind altering narcotic. As with all narcotics the dosage, frequency and specific treatments should be controlled and dispensed through approved Drug Enforcement Administration registered pharmacies.
