Eliminate the production and commercial availability of polystyrene. Polystyrene is a material used for packaging and insulation. The effects of polystyrene production, existence, and disposal are toxic to the environment. When polystyrene is being produced, it releases toxic hydrocarbons that interfere with ozone. Once created polystyrene is nearly impossible to biodegrade and ends up landfills. Finally, when polystyrene is disposed of by incinerating, toxic gases like lead, arsenic, and PCB’s are released into the air. Exposure to such byproducts can irritate lungs, alter the immune system, and cause birth defects. Protect citizen's personal health and the country’s environment by eliminating polystyrene's presence from the United States.
