Container deposit legislation is outdated by 40+ years. The standard 5 cent deposit from 1972 adjusted for inflation should be 28 cents today, to foster litter reduction and clean communities.
Efforts to pass container deposit legislation in the 39 states that do not have them are often politically contentious. The U.S. beverage container industry including bottlers of water, soda, beer, and corporate owners of grocery stores and convenience stores - often spend large amounts of money lobbying against the introduction of both new and amended beverage container deposit legislation.
Change is needed (pun intended) and a relavent 25 cents isn't too much to ask for federal support of legislation that has worked well in my home state of Oregon (and many other states) since the early 1970's
