Professor Stephen Krashen wrote: Children who live in conditions of poverty have limited access to books. They have few books at home, in their classroom libraries, school libraries, and public libraries, and have few bookstores in their neighborhoods (Krashen, Power) . . .The obvious solution is to improve libraries in areas where there are high concentrations of children of poverty: for these children, school and public libraries may be their only source of reading material.
Correctional facilities are required to operate with library services. Why not our schools?
Every school in the USA should be required to provide our students (especially our schools with high poverty levels) with the resource of a teacher librarian and to support literacy and reading at every school level.
