To the tune of nearly $165 Billion dollars worth of fresh food (the equivalent of about 20 lbs for every man, woman, and child in America) being tossed into the garbage instead of being donated to food banks and various shelters because grocery stores seem unaware of the following law --> 1791. Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. Which became law on October 1st, 1996 which protects grocery stores and chains from lawsuits when donating to food banks and shelter and instead simply throw this food away.
The purpose of this petition is to attempt to get the people, the grocery stores/chains, and Congress to begin the process of tackling this national disgrace head on.
