The Hastert rule has been used by congressional leaders, most notably Dennis Haster, Newt Gingrich and most recently John Boehner to deny legislation from being brought to a vote and denying representatives (even from within the majority party) from the chance to enact legislation that will benefit the American People. This "tyranny of the majority party" means that, even if legislation will pass with a majority of house votes, the controlling party can refuse to vote on it even if some members of the party would vote counter to the stated ideology of the party. This practice is immoral as the house was designed to be the voice of the people on the issues of the day, not just those issues that the majority party feels are worthy.
