In the early '80s, groups lobbied to have an amendment added to the Constitution stating that rights cannot be denied due to one's gender. These groups failed, and despite living in the progressive 21st century, there is still nothing in the American constitution that states that women should have equal rights. This allows for women to be paid less than men for completing the same work, and for women to reach a "glass ceiling" in their careers that no law can help them surpass. Forty percent of the United States' workforce is currently female, yet women only earn 81% of their male counterparts' salaries. As we live in a country where women serve as supreme court justices and a world where other countries have had female presidents, it seems unjust that females have yet to be named equals.
