In light of petitions on the extremes of both sides, the whole gun control situation not only is out of hand, it's going nowhere. Gun control advocates want stricter, more enforced gun laws in order to reduce mass shootings, and gun rights advocates want lawful ownership of guns in order to stop said shootings before more innocent lives are claimed. There is no time for arguing; there needs to be a middle ground.
For example, the reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban should not ban listed weapons, but require a Class III FFL to own one, as more thorough background checks are required. Also, mental health evaluations at the expense of the buyer, which is actually discussed, should be mandated for first-time buyers, as people more inclined to violence should not have firearms.
